The following is from a LinkedIn post I shared after my first speaking engagement with Professor Jillian Hmurovic’s Marketing 201 class at Drexel University in March 2023.
I was invited to speak at Drexel University last week to a Marketing 201 class led by Professor Jillian Hmurovic. This was the first time I was asked to do something like this, and it marks an important milestone in my personal and professional development.
How did we make the most of our time?
– A survey was sent a few days prior to the students that asked which topics would be most useful to discuss. I was blown away by the response as over 100 students replied. I put my skills to use and categorized the data and found practical application and career journey were the most popular.
– During the session I kept it as real as I could about exactly what the students wanted to hear. Guidance like “be comfortable being uncomfortable”, “knowing and communicating what success looks like before you start” were among the topics I shared as these were most useful transitioning out of college.
Now that the session is passed, how do I measure my effectiveness?
1) I’ve been asked to come back and speak next semester (woot!)
2) Many of the students have already taken my advice on networking and connected with me on LinkedIn
3) Some students have taken the initiative and sent meeting requests to pick my brain even further.
Thank you again for making this such a memorable experience. I’m so excited to see this next generation of professionals succeed and become mentors themselves.
