Learning More About Myself

We’ve all done them at some point or another. They go by names like Meyers-Briggs, Style of Influence, or even the errant “which sandwich are you” quiz on your social media platform of choice. These tests are all designed to help you understand yourself better (those sandwich ones might be a bit nefarious though). What you do with that information is ultimately up to you, but in my experience the information has been useful for my own self awareness and expediting relationship building with my peers and leaders.

A few months ago one of my favorite leaders at Intuit shared the Wingfinder assessment from Red Bull as part of a team offsite. The assessment took about 30 minutes and provided me with two well constructed PDFs, a summary, and detailed assessment.

Here are some of my main takeaways from this assessment…

  • Overall, it’s accurate in it’s determination of me as a social being, what I enjoy, my values, and how I envision success. I was happy to see how well the assessment identified area for improvement, like being more direct when giving critical feedback and how it can be difficult to work alone at times.
  • The results are broken out by four main areas of success…
    • Connections: I felt like this was spot on given my social nature, comfortability creating connections among my own connections, and willingness to mentor and coach others.
    • Creativity: When it comes to problem solving, new ideas are great, but I’ve also learned that the audience, especially the decision makers, need to be ready for change as well. Defining risk and the confidence in an idea’s chances for success are important to evaluate early and communicate thoughtfully.
    • Drive: I’m literally sharing this information on my own website that’s used for highlighting my accomplishments (among other things). I also remain flexible and aware that sometimes I’m the leader and other times I’m the follower.
    • Thinking: I agree that I can be very analytical at times, however being in Customer Experience I feel torn when certain data doesn’t match the sentiment.

Here’s some of the outputs of the assessment for you to better understand me and what you could expect if you were to take it too.
